NAKASEC is becoming an increasingly influential player in national immigrant justice worlds. This article traces NAKASEC’s evolving critique of legal recognition as the primary goal of immigrant justice work. Following organizers though a 22-day vigil at the White House, a 1700-mile bike tour, and the creation of a housing collective exclusively for illegalized people, I argue that NAKASEC’s call to “re-define what we mean by winning” speaks to an emergent conceptualization of citizenship outside state inclusion. What does immigrant justice work look like when legalization is not its central goal?
Citizenship for All
NAKASEC celebrates the decision made today by U.S. District Judge Andrew Hanen of Texas to not block the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) Program. What this ruling means is that for the time being, the federal government will continue to accept DACA renewal applications. Our young leaders have been at the forefront of organizing and advocating for undocumented immigrants since the threat to DACA first became public. Two NAKASEC DACAmented leaders submitted testimony as part of a counter lawsuit led by MALDEF. We encourage DACA recipients to renew NOW.

We are proud to announce our new “Citizenship for All” campaign which will be launched through our upcoming, border to border “Journey to Justice” Bike Tour August 2018. To launch the “Citizenship for All” campaign, we will embark on a border to border bike tour under the name “Journey to Justice.” Starting on August 1st, our young leaders and allies will bike from Seattle, Washington and continue on until September 6th where we will end the tour in San Diego, California. Through this campaign, our young leaders will cultivate genuine relationships with the rural and urban communities we will bike to, build coalitions with local immigrant and AAPI organizations, and advocate for policy change that provides a clear pathway to citizenship for all non-citizens.
