WHY: In the past few weeks, major proposals on immigration reform have emerged in Congress and from the White House. On March 22, 2007, Representatives Luis Gutierrez (D-IL) and Jeff Flake (R-AZ) introduced the STRIVE Act, the first piece of legislation this year that attempts to address immigration in a comprehensive manner. The STRIVE Act as proposed will have significant impact on the Asian Pacific American (APA) community, including many positive provisions as well as a number of harmful ones. Last week, the White House's own proposal, developed with Republican Senators, was leaked to the media. The White House proposal has been widely denounced for failing to consider fundamental American values of strong families and basic fairness. During the week of April 9, APA organizations around the nation are calling on the community to oppose the White House's anti-family and anti-worker plan.
