On January 18, KRC joined the Teacher’s Strike in support of lower class sizes across all grades, more resources in our classrooms, improved school safety, and more instructional time and fewer standardized tests for the students.

For the first time since the founding of Los Angeles, City Councilmembers voted to create the city’s first dedicated revenue source for affordable housing. With the historic vote today, Council adopted the Affordable Housing Linkage Fee (linkage fee), which will double the city’s annual affordable housing production for those most in need.

AAPI community members visited Senator Schumer’s office to ask for a stronger commitment to passing a clean DREAM Act this year in his role as Democratic Minority Leader. Upon entering Schumer’s office, the community members commenced a “Sing-In” with holiday themed protest songs to demonstrate a sense of urgency to Senator Schumer. Following the “Sing-In,” two senior staff from the Senator’s office met with the AAPI contingent and provided a space for them to voice their concerns.

Nearly 5,000 undocumented young people, immigrant rights advocates, and faith leaders congregated today at 12:00 PM at the Upper Senate Park for a rally in support of a clean DREAM Act and permanent solution for Temporary Protected Status. Events included: stories from directly impacted people, calls to action by members of Congress, and a civil disobedience on the steps of Capitol Hill resulting in the arrest of Congresswoman Judy Chu and Congressman Luis Gutierrez and 182 individuals, five from NAKASEC.

Over 30 voters, students, and community members in support of the DREAM Act rallied outside the office building of U.S. Congressmember Mimi Walters. Voters were seeking answers from their representative - will she meet with the community to discuss the fate of the dreamers? Will she support a clean DREAM Act? Why is she avoiding the issue? Jonathan Paik, OC Director at KRC said “We reached out to 5,110 Asian American voters in Representative Walter’s district, and 74% have said that they urge their congressmember to vote for a Clean DREAM Act. We are baffled at Walter’s lack of responsiveness to this pressing community issue. The DREAM Act is a strong legislative solution that would allow young immigrants to continue living their American Dream with a path to citizenship. It only makes sense to support the bill.”

IRVINE - Today, U.S. Senator Kamala D. Harris, a member of the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, rallied in support of the DREAM Act at the University of California, Irvine. At the rally with students, clergy and business leaders, Harris discussed her efforts to protect Dreamers, highlighted the Administration’s unwillingness to extend the DACA renewal deadline, and encouraged Congress to pass the DREAM Act. The DREAM Act, a bipartisan bill co-sponsored by Harris, would ensure a path to citizenship for children brought to the United States by their parents.

CPEHN applauds the agreement announced late last night to fully restore adult dental benefits in the Medi-Cal program. Since 2009, Medi-Cal beneficiaries have gone without critical services, including partial dentures, root canals on back teeth and molars, and gum treatments. This has led to tooth decay, unnecessary extractions, job loss, and decreased quality of life for vulnerable seniors and low-income Californians.

LOS ANGELES, CA - As tensions are high in immigrant communities due to fear of deportation and family separation NAKASEC and KRC are launching a Know Your Rights mobile app for Android, and later iOS, with the help of volunteers from a high tech company. The app was specifically created for community members who are in crisis or have been approached by police or Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) with border communities and various language speakers in mind. The Know Your Rights app is now available for download for Android on Google Play.

LOS ANGELES--Minorities should work together to uplift the most vulnerable of their number--African Americans--according to some speakers at a multiethnic event on Saturday that marked the 25th anniversary of the 1992 Los Angeles riots. Words like "revolution" occasionally punctuated the air as community organizers took aim against conservative societal forces, which activists said had propagated racism and capitalism. Racism and capitalism were the causes of the 1992 civil unrest, some speakers said.
