Our Dreams Are On Trial: Immigrant Rights Organizations Rise Up For Daca

As DACA faces its biggest challenge in the Supreme Court, immigrants come together to defend it and to fight for a permanent solution

Los Angeles, CA -- On the second anniversary of President Trump's rescinding of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, immigrant rights groups will announce "Rise Up for DACA," the campaign to defend the program as it faces its biggest-ever challenge in the Supreme Court.

The coalition will hold a rally and press conference at 11 a.m. Thursday, September 5 at the downtown Federal Building. We will hear testimony from DACA pioneers, beneficiaries, and those who missed out on DACA because of Trump's decision.

The Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights (CHIRLA), COFEM, the Center for Community Change, the Dream Resource Center, the Korean Resource Center, Loyola Law School and the Inland Empire Immigrant Youth Collective pledge to encourage as many DACA permit renewals as possible ahead of November 12, when the Supreme Court will hear arguments in consolidated cases challenging Trump's decision. The court will likely hand down a ruling before June 2020.

The campaign will also enlist help from California's public universities, requesting that they file amicus briefs in the case. CHIRLA is a plaintiff in one of the cases before the court. Regardless of the court's ruling, we will ramp up efforts to move a permanent solution in Congress so these youth will remain protected.

Nearly 800,000 young people benefited from DACA since it began in 2012. The SCOTUS case is the most immediate challenge to their ability to stay with their families without the fear of deportation. They lead our campaign, because for them, this is not a drill.
