On Wednesday, October 17, 2007, KRC-HAP participated in a conversation with students from the Community Health Involvement Project (CHIP) at the University of Southern California. The evening's goals were to increase awareness about hurdles immigrants face, whether financial, language based, or otherwise. In addition, discussion leaders impressed upon these future healthcare professionals the importance of cultural competency, through examples and stories.
Many thanks to Daniel Wu, KRC's Having Our Say program intern for coordinating the event. Daniel also drafted a fact sheet on uninsurance as well as a policy brief. Both handouts were distributed along with pledge cards which the students signed, committing to speak about health issues to at least 5 family members and friends. We are pleased to report the evening successfully sparked an interest in immigrant issues pertaining to healthcare.
