Jenny Seon, immigrant rights project director for the Korean Resource Center who lives in Koreatown a few blocks from the site of the proposed shelter, said she hoped the Korean community could see past the “fairness of the process” and assess the shelter for what it is. The temporary housing will be a lot easier to explain to the community’s children than the homeless encampments that are currently on their walk to school, she said. “It’s wonderful for kids to see that the community will build housing for people on the street,” she said.

In the backdrop of President Donald Trump’s cruel xenophobia, Orange County Immigrant Youth United, Resilience Orange County, Korean Resource Center, and Chispa partnered for a local “Coming out of the Shadows” effort on Friday. We convened at Sasscer Park (aka Black Panther Park) and were joined by community members that stand with immigrant rights and all its intersections. From there, we marched up Calle Cuatro chanting and calling more community members to join us.
The beating of Korean drums drowned out chants of “Yes, we can!” Monday evening, as immigrants right activists and people in favor of tougher immigration laws both protested outside the Irvine office of Rep. Mimi Walters. More than 150 pro-immigration activists noisily chanted, cheered and marched while a smaller group carrying signs with messages like “No DACA, Americans First” marched alongside, sometimes videotaping the protesters. A Facebook feed of the event was provided by the Korean Resource Center, a social justice organization in Orange and Los Angeles counties.

Sen. Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) said on Wednesday evening that a bipartisan immigration agreement has the support of a majority of the Senate. "The math is simple. We have 56 senators ready to move forward with this issue," he said. Four GOP senators signed onto the "Gang of Six" proposal. In addition to GOP Sens. Linsey Graham (S.C.), Cory Gardner (Colo.) and Jeff Flake (Ariz.) — who negotiated the deal — that brings the total number of Senate Republicans supporting the agreement to seven.

We are relatively new to this country. The population numbered less than 70,000 in 1970 but now over a million of us contribute to the economy and the diversity of this country. The US health care system is neither designed to include all Americans, nor could it evolve to become inclusive for immigrants if left alone. Rather than trying to patch up the tattered cloth that had never fit to start with, we need to contribute to the making of the new garb, starting from the fundamental weaving of the fabric. U.S. is our home and we need to contribute to making this country livable for us and those who come after us. We all - churches, clinics, businesses, community organizations, schools, adults, children, old and young - need to come together to mount an effective movement toward reform.
