Presently, many state governments run health insurance programs for children of low-income families, funded in half by the federal government. These programs have been possible due to the funding generated through the SCHIP (State Children’s Health Insurance Program). However, the SCHIP expires in March 2009, and therefore, many states’ children’s health insurance programs, including that of California, will be discontinued.
In addition, due to the state budget crisis, California will increase the premiums and co-payments for the state Healthy Families Program and place a $1500 cap on dental services, also through the Healthy Families Program. These budget cuts will hurt many low-income families and their children in California.
To educate the public about these changes, to campaign for an extension and the expansion of the SCHIP as well as the Healthy Families Program, and to further develop a better children’s health insurance program in the future, we are asking parents and anyone else concerned about the issue to come together and voice our concerns through PAC.
