Hope for a clean bill is what motivated 21-year-old Min Jung Park, a student at UC Irvine, to fly to Washington to join one of her first immigration protests this summer. Park, a DACA recipient who lives in Walters’ district, said she is more worried about what the deal-making could mean for her 15-year-old sister, who is no longer eligible for DACA because of Trump’s decision.
IRVINE - Today, U.S. Senator Kamala D. Harris, a member of the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, rallied in support of the DREAM Act at the University of California, Irvine. At the rally with students, clergy and business leaders, Harris discussed her efforts to protect Dreamers, highlighted the Administration’s unwillingness to extend the DACA renewal deadline, and encouraged Congress to pass the DREAM Act. The DREAM Act, a bipartisan bill co-sponsored by Harris, would ensure a path to citizenship for children brought to the United States by their parents.

Following the journey of Kim Sangdon, we reflect on the past 50 years of activism and organizing in Asian America and immigrant communities till today, specifically in the causes of immigrant rights, health, civic engagement, art, and more. What have we learned from the leaders before us and how do we follow in their footsteps in movements we believe in? Joined by organizers who are active in various causes, we will discuss the inspiration they draw from past leaders and how they will strategize for equality and justice in today’s political climate.
