Dear Friends,
Please join me to support an organization near and dear to my heart - Chinese for Affirmative Action (CAA). CAA will celebrate their 47th anniversary on Thursday, September 8, 2016 in San Francisco’s Chinatown. For more information, click here.
You are cordially invited to the grand opening celebration of our most recent affordable housing development, Durae Senior Apartments, formerly LDK Senior Apartments. “Durae” is a Korean word that roughly describes the ancient agrarian practice of community barn-raising. The spirit of helping one another is apt for Durae Senior Apartments, where it took a village to build this affordable housing complex for seniors.
The opening of the two new affordable senior housing buildings represents a hard fought victory resulting from over a decade of organizing and advocacy by the Korean Resource Center (KRC) and its senior organizing group, the Community Health Promoters (CHP). CHP members are informed, low-income Korean American senior activists who have led and won major campaigns for language access, immigrant rights, health care, state funding for health and human services, redistricting, and now, the Durae senior homes. Please join us on Friday, September 9th, 2016 to recognize the many partners and individuals who made Durae Senior Apartments possible. Please plan to park on the street and carpool as much as possible. Coffee will be available before the program begins at 9:30 am. Food, refreshments and tours of the property will be provided to guests after the program.
KRC is currently recruiting students attending LAUSD high schools to participate in civic engagement this upcoming fall semester. KRC’s youth volunteers will participate in the LA Youth Vote program to mobilize high school students, build voter engagement, and register eligible peers to vote in California’s elections. The LA Youth Vote is a year round targeted civic engagement effort to empower high school students to become aware and engage in civic life. KRC will train high school students to serve as Voter Outreach Coordinators, conduct voter awareness activities on their campus, and practice their right to vote on Election Day.
Interested parents or high school students, please contact Jinkyung Park at jinkyung [at] krcla.org, or call (323) 937-3718.
Asian Pacific Islander Americans and allies are coming together online to create resources to address anti-black racism in our communities and to introduce the #BlackLivesMatter movement to immigrant families. In light of recent fatal police shooting of Alton Sterling in Louisiana and Philando Castile in Minnesota, on top of already some 125 Black lives that have been cut short by police this year alone, it’s so important that our Asian immigrant families have a better understanding of why Black Lives Matters is important to our lives as well. The open letter for Black Lives has been translated to over 30 languages, including Korean.
The project now seeks contributions from the community to read the letters and record it in audio or video format to share broadly with the public. Please join this project!
KRC is hosting a Community Block Party in Santa Ana to promote civic engagement and youth organizing.
