With your contribution, we are able to empower marginalized communities and at this year’s "Building A Movement for Change: From Roots to Power 34th Annual Gala", we have received pledges up to $120,000.
On the night of October 19th at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels, we were joined by guest speaker Don Howard (President and CEO of the James Irvine Foundation) presented awards to three fierce women of color leaders in our communities - Congresswoman Maxine Waters (CA-43), Luisa Blue (Executive Vice President of SEIU), and Jeanette Vázquez (Fullerton School Board member) as well as three youth leaders - Sameerah Haque, Hyun Joong Kim, and Eric Eunsoo Yang. It was an honor to see each of these leaders gathered at our largest event of the year.
Congresswoman Maxine Waters said, “To all those who have been affected by anti-immigrant actions, I want you to know I have your back and so do my colleagues in the House and Senate. We are fighting every day to hold the administration accountable, and we will continue to push for a bipartisan solution for DACA before the clock runs out.”
Luisa Blue said, "We have to fight and organize for rights for workers to organize into the union and we have to fight and organize for minimum wage of $15 an hour so the family can thrive. Let’s fight like hell for a better country and we can do this together."
Jeanette Vázquez said, “Tonight, I thank every single one of you for the walls you have helped tear down and to the bridges we will continue building for immigrant families everywhere.”
Sameerah Haque said, “It is a privilege to even be considered for this award, let alone receive it, but this would not have been possible without all of the hardworking, wonderful, and inspiring people at the HANA Center, who gave me a space to grow, and the knowledge and opportunities to become the activist I am today.”
Hyun Joong Kim said “I enjoy working with people who are affected just like me and helping educate other people about current affairs and what was going on in the world. That’s why to this day I continue to volunteer and to be involved with NAKASEC.”
Eric Eunsoo Yang said, “There is this thing we do at KRC’s Leaders of the New School. We always end the night with ‘Let’s go around saying one word of how we are feeling at the moment.’ Tonight that one word...is ‘loved’. I feel loved at KRC. I feel loved at LNS."
